A few tips to land your job as a campground store manager

If you're looking for a job in retail, you're in the right place! The role of store manager at a campground is hugely important for giving guests a convenient, good-quality option for essentials throughout their stay. Whether you're interested in selling fresh produce, everyday essentials, or local products, there are plenty of store manager jobs waiting for you at campgrounds.

Management and Administrative Skills

To become a store manager at a campground, it's essential to master the running of a small retail store: inventory control and vendor orders, monitoring expiration dates, cash management, and day-to-day bookkeeping. A degree in retail or business management, or significant sales experience, is highly valued. Stay up to date on food safety standards for selling food products and the relevant regulations.

Product Selection and Guest Satisfaction

Guest satisfaction is a core part of a store manager's role. Make sure you offer a selection that suits guests' needs: bread and pastries, fruits and vegetables, basic groceries, drinks, ice cream, plus local and convenience items (newspapers/magazines, beach gear, games). Listen to customer feedback and adjust your selection based on traffic and guest expectations throughout the season.

Organization and Managing Peak Periods

As a store manager, you'll need to organize your work to handle busy periods (morning rush, weekends, check-in and check-out days). Get into the habit of anticipating inventory needs based on seasonality and how busy the campground is, to avoid running out of stock. Make sure the store meets safety, sanitation, and cleanliness standards at all times, including during health inspections.

Communication and Teamwork

Communication is key to being an effective store manager at a campground. Check in regularly with campground management to coordinate orders, logistics, and any promotional activities (special offers, local products). Train seasonal staff on the store's procedures and maintain a good working atmosphere to ensure consistently high-quality service for guests.
