A few tips to land your job as a campground caretaker / night security guard

If you're looking for a job in security, you're in the right place! The role of campground caretaker or night security guard is hugely important for keeping guests safe and maintaining peace and quiet on the property overnight. Whether you're interested in access control, security patrols, or handling incidents during the night, there are plenty of caretaker/night security jobs waiting for you at campgrounds.

Vigilance and Knowledge of the Property

To become a campground caretaker or night security guard, it's essential to know the property and how it operates inside and out (access points, restrooms, pool, common areas, sensitive areas). Experience in security or a state security guard license/certification is an advantage, particularly for managing fire alarms and following safety procedures. Stay up to date on the campground's procedures and instructions so you can respond effectively in any situation.

Security Patrols and Prevention

Security patrols are a core part of a night security guard's role. Carry out regular patrols across the whole property to check that access points are secured, equipment is working properly, and there are no signs of intrusion or risky behavior. Make sure quiet hours and closing times (bar, pool, restrooms) are respected, and stay alert for anything unusual that could pose a danger to guests or to the property.

Responding to Emergencies

As a night security guard, you need to be ready to respond quickly in an emergency (fire, intrusion, medical issue, conflict between guests). Know the alert procedures and emergency numbers inside and out, and make sure safety equipment (fire extinguishers, alarms, emergency lighting) is accessible and in working order. Stay calm and professional during incidents to reassure guests and manage the situation effectively until backup arrives if needed.

Communication and Handover

Communication is essential to being an effective campground caretaker. Check in with the day team to pass on important information from the night (incidents, anything unusual, guest requests) through written or verbal reports. Reach out to management if a situation calls for a quick decision, and stay reachable for guests if they need help during the night.
